PLAR
The Alliance receives over 1000 inquiries each year about Educational and Qualifications Assessments and nearly 250 official requests are submitted annually.
Approximately 42% of applicants have Substantially Equivalent Qualifications. While fewer than 5% of applicants are unsuccessful, 53% of applicants are eligible if they complete the required education/training through the Prior Learning Assessment and Remediation (PLAR) Program.
What is the Prior Learning Assessment and Remediation (PLAR) Program?
Launched in 1998, the Prior Learning Assessment and Remediation (PLAR) Program serves to assist you if you do not have Substantially Equivalent Qualifications due to "small gaps" in your education. PLAR assists you by providing upgrading opportunities through credit for courses/seminars completed after formal physiotherapy education or experience.
The Alliance has a formal relationship with the Thompson Rivers - Open University Division in Burnaby, British Columbia to accept PLAR applicants as students to fulfill their academic gaps. If you are a PLAR applicant, you can also fill your academic gaps by enrolling in courses at other accredited universities. Gaps in supervised clinical practice areas can be met through past work experience.
How can I apply for the Prior Learning Assessment and Remediation (PLAR) Program?
Before you can take part in the PLAR program, you must wait until you receive the results of your Educational Credential and Qualifications assessment. You will only be able to apply for PLAR if it is necessary, or if you are eligible for the program.
If your assessment shows that you have large gaps in program length, content or level of education, you will not be eligible for the PLAR Program. In cases like this, you may wish to consider pursuing a university-level physiotherapy education in Canada. As part of the Credentialling assessment process, The Alliance assists you in examining your options which will help eliminate the identified gaps, either in Canada or in your home country.
The current version of Educational Credential Assessment Package is the official version of Credentialling Policies and Procedures.
