History

Incorporated in December 1992, The Alliance's mission was to develop and implement a national examination program for physiotherapists entering practice in Canada.

Through the dedicated leadership of volunteers along with the tireless efforts of The Alliance staff, the written examination was first administered in June 1994. The following year saw the implementation of the clinical examination. In 1996, Credentialling program standards were updated based on best practices.

By 1998, The Alliance had also grown to take on facilitation of larger national projects, such as the development of a model of continuing competence and a national complaints and discipline database. Also in 1998, The Alliance published the Competency Profile for Entry-Level Physiotherapists in Canada. This role in policy development continues to evolve.

The environment in which we do business is constantly evolving, and The Alliance continues to evolve with the times. We have responded to changes in public funding models, new technologies, and different demands for physiotherapy services. We continue our dedication to public protection by working on issues such as ethical standards, conflict of interest, electronic health information, telehealth services, and the role of support workers.
